More and more dog sports are developing and allow us to spend time in the great outdoors with our dog while doing sports. Among the most popular and most practiced dog sports, there is canicross. Canicross is a sport that combines running and teamwork with your dog. It strengthens the bond between you and your four-legged friend while improving your physical condition and that of your dog.

What is Canicross?

The principle is simple: canicross is a sports discipline where the runner is connected to his dog by a line attached to a belt and a harness. The dog runs in front of the runner, helping the runner to move forward and maintain a steady pace. Canicross is practiced in nature on trails, dirt roads or country roads, and can be practiced in competition or simply for fun. It's a speed race where you and your dog form a real team.

The right equipment for canicross
  • A specific harness for your dog, designed to distribute the force of traction over his entire body and not on his neck.

  • A belt for runners, which is worn around the waist and helps absorb shocks and distribute traction force.

  • An elastic line, which connects the dog harness to the runner's belt, allowing some freedom of movement while maintaining a secure connection.

  • Trail shoes adapted to running in nature, offering good grip and good cushioning.

Good physical condition for both

It is important that the dog and the runner are in good physical condition to practice canicross. Consult a veterinarian to check your dog's health and make sure he is fit to run. Small dogs, older dogs, or those with joint or respiratory problems may not be suitable for this sport.

Likewise, the runner must be in good physical shape and used to running. If you're just starting out, start with short sessions and gradually increase the distance and intensity.

    Can my dog do it?

In theory, any dog can practice Canicross, regardless of size or breed. Canicross dogs are required to be at least 18 months old, and during competitions, to be up to date on their vaccines. A veterinarian must also have validated his ability to practice sport. Athletes participating in Canicross competitions will favor breeds that are enduring, fast and reactive. But the most important thing is to adapt to the dog's stamina and motivation.

Precautions to take before practicing canicross

    • Avoid feeding your dog just before a canicross session, as this can cause digestive problems or stomach twisting. Wait at least two hours after a meal to run with your dog.
    • Make sure you're well hydrated before, during, and after running, and keep your dog hydrated as well.
    • Adapt your practice according to the weather. Dogs are sensitive to heat, so avoid running during the hottest hours of the day in summer.

Where and how to do canicross?

Canicross can be practiced in daily life, in parks or on jogging paths. All you need is the right hardware.

Participate in canicross races or join a club

Numerous canicross races are organized around the world, offering sporting challenges and friendly meetings with other canicross enthusiasts. To participate in these races, it is often necessary to register in advance and to respect certain rules, such as wearing safety equipment for the dog and the runner.

It is also possible to join a canicross club, where you can find training partners and tips to improve your technique. Clubs often offer group workouts, group outings, and training courses for beginners.

Canicross is a fun and stimulating sport that strengthens the bond between you and your dog while improving your health and well-being. By following these tips and taking the necessary precautions, you can take full advantage of this sporting activity in nature and maybe even start canicross competitions.

Thanks to the future Jagger&Lewis collar, follow the paths and performances of your dog during canicross outings.
