Running away in dogs is a behavior that worries and concerns many owners. Understanding the causes of running away is essential to effectively address them and prevent associated risks.

Understanding the reasons for running away

Dogs are curious animals that have need for physical and mental stimulation to be happy and balanced. Exploring new scents and the opportunity to mark their territory are natural activities for them. If a dog does not get enough enrichment in its daily environment, it may seek to make up for this lack by escaping.

Unsterilized dogs are also more likely to run away to look for partners. Uncastrated males may be particularly motivated to follow the scents of females in heat, while unsterilized females may also escape to find a mate. Sterilization can often reduce this behavior linked to the reproductive instinct.

A dog that feels anxious or stressed in their environment may try to escape to get away from the source of his discomfort. Separation anxiety, excessive noise, conflicts with other animals, for example, can contribute to this flight behavior.

A dog that does not receive not getting enough physical and mental exercise may develop unwanted behaviors, such as running away, to vent their energy and frustration.

What are the solutions?

Make sure that your dog benefits from enrichment in his daily environment. This may include regular walks to explore new scents, interactive play sessions, and using occupation toys to mentally stimulate your dog. Also offer him the opportunity to socialize with other dogs during dog outings or encounters.

Identify and address potential sources of stress and anxiety for your dog. This may include accommodations to minimize excessive noise, establishing a safe space where your dog can relax, setting up a regular routine, and consulting a behaviorist for one-on-one advice.

Make sure your dog gets enough exercise to expend their energy and avoid frustration. Adapt the exercise to your dog's age, size, and breed to meet their specific needs.

Make sure your garden is secure to prevent your dog from escaping. Check fences and gates for possible weak spots and make sure they are tall and sturdy enough.

With the Jagger & Lewis app and collar, set up a virtual fence and locate your dog in real time.

Your dog does not have to eat after you!

The alpha male theory is a widely held belief that suggests that a dominant hierarchy must be established between owner and dog, and that the owner must eat before his dog to assert his leadership position. However, recent research has questioned this theory and has shown that establishing a relationship based on trust and cooperation is more beneficial for dogs and their owners. It is therefore no longer appropriate to have your dog eat after yourself. We explain to you why!
